My dad and I are building this 1974 AMC Javelin for the nostalgia drag racing series. The car is currently deep under construction, but this is how it looked when we bought it. It is basically an empty shell right now. I have already rebuilt and modded a 400 Mopar big block engine, 727 automatic trans and 8.75" rear end with a spool and 4:56 gears. My dad has been stripping the rest of the car to reduce weight to the bare minimum and modifying the rear suspension. This is going to be a race-only car and we estimate weight will be in the 2500-2600lb range. Some of the AMC purists have given us the stink eye for going with a Mopar drivetrain, but we figure since AMCs are now allowed at Mopar events now we'll have a really unique car that we can still get parts for. Hopefully it won't be a dog...in any case this should be a fun season once we get this car on the track!
Thank you for the encouragement guys! I will take an 'under construction' photo of the car today to show you. The transmission is a chrysler torqueflyte 727 with a reverse-pattern (PRN123) manual-shift-only valve body and a torque converter with a 3200rpm stall speed. Shifted by a B&M ratchet shifter. That Javelin police car is really neat! Thanks for sharing that link.
I didn't get a chance to get over to my dad's place today to get a photo of the javelin chassis, but here is one from last month. Here is a shot of the engine I built for it. The engine is a Chrysler 400ci big block, nothing too fancy. Our goal this season is to get the car to run consistantly in the 11's without spending a fortune. In the nostalgia class we want to race we are not allowed any fancy electronics, fuel injection, traction controls or nitrous. So I built the engine with a cam good to about 6500rpm, steel heads, aluminum intake, 750 Holley dbl pumper, hi-volume mechanical fuel pump, clutch fan, total loss ignition (no alternator, battery only) and a few other go fast goodies. "Should be" around 400hp/500ftlbs but we'll see...
As we get more serious about racing and budget allows I will upgrade the engine with higher flowing aluminum heads and a 440 crank, which will bump up displacement to around 451ci. But for the time being, if this thing runs the way I am hoping it will, we should have a good reliable base for future engine and chassis performance upgrades.

Nice Javelin , you don't see many around these days . Indy Cylinder Heads has a lot of nice stuff for Mopars , and they used to have Repo AMC parts . Only problem is , they ain't cheap . Speed costs money , how fast do you what to go ? I know that they race prep the 904 trans and I believe that are able to get around 50 runs running them behind SS/ AA Hemi Darts and Barracudas , again , probably not cheap , but it would save lots of weight over a 727 .
You're right on about the Indy heads and the 904 transmission. Definitely they are in our longterm plans. We're working on a tight budget with the Javelin, which is kinda tough when you are talking about Mopar stuff. I have had plently of people ask, "Why didn't you just save money and put in a small block Chevy?" But for us, AMC is an acronym for "And Mostly Chrysler" So far most of the costs to build this car have been offset by selling our unneeded street legal and interior parts to other Javelin restorers. My dad and I are new to drag racing, so hopefully our car will be fairly reliable as we learn the ropes. Thanks for the input!

Understood , if you have any questions I have friends who drag race . I enjoy nostalgia and sportsman racing . SB Chevy in AMC , pretty much like the fox body Mustang and being a guy with a penis , seems like everyone had one .
