AMT recently re-issued their old Vicky kit, and since watching the latest episode of Mad Fabricators' Society online last weekend, I've been itching to try to build a Hawaiian style hot rod. Sunday after lunch seemed like the perfect opportunity to spend some money at the local hobby shop, so I managed to get this much done yesterday: The island cars, like the classic East Coast style, tend to be heavily channeled over the frame, so I cut the toeboards and the riser out of the molded-in rear bench seat so I could set it lower over the frame. This heavy drop necessitated raising the fenders several scale inches as well. The re-shaped front fenders started to resemble folded wings - hence the Bird of Paradise moniker - and I remembered to stop and take a pic partway through the shaping process, so the extent of the modification would be more evident: The kit includes the custom bobbed fender pieces for the fist time in many years, so I thought I'd use them. They're just attached a little higher on the body than AMT's kit designers intended. I've got it mocked up with an injected early SBC and a LaSalle trans. Now I need to come up with an exhaust solution.
