In keeping with the general vintage feel of the forum, & liking Ohm's war theme, I'm going for a WWI SE 5A in 1/14th scale with a 24" wingspan. I see no way to get it done by 15 Dec, much less modify it (like make it micro-electric), but we'll see what happens. Just ordered on Amazon prime so will be here on Monday. What the hell am I doing...

I'm hoping the laser cut pieces, as opposed to die cut, might cut the prep time. These come with full size plans to place pieces over each rib & spar (2D), but now thinking of making cardboard jigs (3D) instead, at least for the main assemblies. Although that may be a crap shoot time-wise. Getting a little stoked about it now...

I hope more people get into balsa again, then teach it to your kids. It seems to be a dying craft in the US. Only a couple of handfuls of kits even available anymore. But once you learn it, a kit is a nice luxury, especially on a true scale reproduction. But my scratch built stuff was always my favorite. Immediate gradification & the ready-to-fly & almost-ready-to-fly kits sidestep the craft of the hobby. That's a shame...
If its anything like the other kits, yeah. But not by to much(assuming you have high standards). Starting to think I should get the DR1 and do it up like Werner Voss' since you brought out the SE5.
Going through some mods on paper now - not quite sure what yet, but Voss & the tridecker would not have had any chance against my modified SE. May take some ques from the Pitts playbook. We'd take that mudder-fokker right out!

I changed the order & paid the extra $4 for next day shipping so I could get a jump on this. Here it is. That's not the box it came in but is the build box. I get tired of sitting in one place so smaller builds go in a box. And this kit will go together as modular components. Final assembly goes in a long box. Nice kit & even came with plenty of tissue, although I've got some old OD green tissue I'll try, but may go with Koverall if time gets short. I'll make copies of the original prints & cut them to fit in assembly area. Here we go...
Watching this one closely. I've never built a balsa model plane of this type. Only built those silly (but fun) balsa planes that you include a rubber band and wind up the prop the opposite way and then let it go.
I think I see a 2-part thermal formed pilot figure?

Don't watch this too close, Ohm. I'm short cutting the hell out of this where I can.
Here's the first hour parts layout for gluing. Left bottom wing. Nope, not gluing over plans (never do this, ohm). Instead, one rib is aligned to the spars & all subsequent ribs are aligned to that rib with a jig. This works on most of the wing & fuselage. Also giving it a Curtis Pitts model 12 makeover. Will have to fab a few parts but will end up with a symmetrical airfoil on the top wing (as opposed to stock flat bottom) & modifications to the wing tips & the tail section as well. Haven't decided on a motor yet but this will give Werner a run for his money.

Think I'm starting to see bits of a plane here. Decided to go ahead & build the wingtips per the kit, then cut off & change later. The missing ribs in the finished wing were due to an enthusiastic doggy. I will make replacements. BTW - if you cover the bottom of the boxes with clear packing tape, wood glue (& most others) won't stick to it - so you don't glue your pieces to the box The syringe is also for glue. Mainlining Elmer's now when I get bored...
