My 8 year old has out grown his first 20" bmx bike. He had a specialized hotrock BMX with a small stand over and a 17" top tube. In the past year he has shot up and now he looks like a circus bear on it. He is bugging me about hitting the bmx track. School is out and Wednesday nights are free practice at the track so it's time for a new ride.
Now we got to figure out which bike to buy. Good thing I didn't t spring for the high zoot mini last time. On the other hand his little brother is killing it on his 16". At almost 5 years old hes got that throw himself at it style of riding. You know, the no fear head on into a curb style. I am worried about that one.
Love to shop for bikes even when they are not for me.

First place I hit, ;D Then I looked at the mirraco, haro and faux bmx specialized and trek because I can get them at cost. It looks like the Mirraco No7 in matte purple with UGV green highlights is it. Not really a race bike but an all around bmx bike. Then I am bidding on a nos 13" Gary fisher mullet dj frame. It can take 24" tires, a front and rear dérailleur and a rear disc brake. I got enough mountain bike parts to cobble up a 24" wheeled mountain bike for him to start hitting the trails with. if no one else bids I will get it for 9.99. There is another for sale up to $11. So they are not in high demand apparently .

Thats killer, stuff like that almost makes me wish I had kids, almost. There is so much out there these days for decent budget minded bikes, plus building stuff yourself with ebay/used scores can end up being so economical. Seemed like when I was a kid only rich kids had good bikes, or maybe we were just that poor. Even dept store bikes are way better these days. Did you end up getting anything yet? Did you win the Mullet? That could be a good trials rig when he gets bigger.....

Yeah it's fun for sure, but you have to keep it in perspective. You have to realize when to build the right bike for them. Glad I didn't spring for the high zoot mini last year. He shot up and out grew it in a year.
Now we have this 17" top tube frame with a short stand over. I swapped out the Krupi 2" rise bar for the stock 6" rise 24 wide bar and raised the seat to the max. He said it felt better, but the bars still felt small. I then grabbed a pair of standard 28" wide 8" rise bars I hade laying around, skyway no less and put them on. Then I found a 25.4 post I had and got him 4 more inches of seat height. Now he has the widest bars and is on his tippi toes so it gets no bigger. He said it felt like he was flying. Now he has yet to ever ride the local bmx track so we are going to get him a helmet and some pads this week and he'd to the track with his current bike and give it a whirl.
The new bike he wanted is kind of an all around bike so it's built tough. I don't mind if he dosent take to bmx, but if he does I think there are better choices. Plus my little guy isn't ready for that bike yet. He will get that bike the second he is ready for it, but it's not gonna happen this season.
The mullet has one more day and it's up to $50+ so I don't know if I am going to bid any further. there are 24" mountain bikes from specialized that I can get for a good deal. He did express the desire to go off road with me so we will see how bmx works out before I comit.

Well rather than spend big bucks on a new one we decided to make due this year with what we have. He successfully survived his first day on the track and now we need to change some things.

We found that his seat was too high and too nice for the track so I got him a UNI plastic one. One set up for the track and one for the street. His number plate came in as well. Next up are a new set of bars and a new stem. Attachments:
